Class Newsletter Summer Term

Dear parents/ carers,

A warm welcome back, hope you have all had a lovely and relaxing Easter break. Just a note to let you know the kind of activities that are going to be going on over the summer term in class 1. The school's topic this term is habitats, homes and contrasting localities. Therefore in class 1 we are going to be looking at mini-beasts for the 1st half of the summer term, before moving on to summer and seaside resorts for the final half term.

Personal, social and emotional

Within this area we are going to be looking closely at safety, by looking at how to be sensitive to others and animals. We will also learn that animals have feelings too we will also look at how to take care of ourselves, especially in the sun. We will also share, and discuss ideas on a number of areas and look at how people have to work together closely to make things work, and the qualities needed for this.

Language and literacy

In this area we are going to be looking at a number of books both fiction and non-fiction. Children are going to use stories told to them and books looked at in a number of ways e.g. sequencing stories, drawing upon main aspects within the stories, retelling stories, using puppets as aids, looking closely at story settings and describing them,  making predictions and rhymes. We are also going to be writing recounts of activities we have done e.g. a mini-beast hunt, and look at writing for a number of purposes e.g. writing postcards, letters, birthday cards, lists etc.

Mathematics

We are going to be looking at a number of areas in Numeracy, especially counting, adding and subtracting. Children will be doing this is a number of ways e.g. counting and using mini-beasts and practical games. In this area children will also be looking at size, shape, position and will be taking part in measuring activities. All this will be linked to the topic we are covering.

Knowledge and understanding of the world (Geography, History, Science, ICT)

Whilst looking at mini-beasts children will go on a number of mini-beast hunts, where they will have the chance to observe the mini-beasts in their natural environment, discuss this, and the conditions they live in. Within this area children will do a number of sorting activities, and have an awareness of living things. Hopefully over the next few weeks we will have a mini butterfly garden set up in the classroom, where children will have the opportunity to observe caterpillars changing overtime into butterflies; fingers crossed it comes soon!

Creative (Art, Technology, Music)

A number of skills will be developed in this area e.g. listening to different sounds which different things make, and how the sound can be changed.  Children will have the opportunity to make a number of mini-beasts, using different things e.g. clay play-dough, boxes, tissue paper etc. They will also get the opportunity to create a number of pictures using different skills, and resources. We will also be doing some weaving, collage work, dancing etc. Children will continue to take part in role-play within the class. The role-play area which is set up is currently a garden centre, and hopefully will be changing to a travel agents after half term.

Physical

We will be drawing upon different skills in this area; children will develop their abilities to move with confidence and imagination, to music and without it. They will also be developing there balancing and games skills through a range of activities and outdoor play. An aspect of miming will be covered along side dance. Hopefully as we are now in summer term, we will be able to use the outdoor area more, allowing children to be able to develop these skills alongside others outside.

Hope this has been of help to you all, and if you need to ask any questions or have any concerns do not hesitate to come and see me, I will be more than happy to help. Thank you all for all your help and support over the last 2 terms.
