Learning is Fun at Bramham Primary School

The pupils at Bramham Primary School have recently been enjoying the new extra-curricular activities.  Since September The Little Seedlings Gardening and Allotment Club  have made an allotment within the school grounds, where they have planted fruit and vegetables like butternut squash, garlic and strawberry plants. The whole school have also been active in the Bramham in Bloom campaign,  Leeds in Bloom and we are also taking part in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition.  Currently they are working in the pond area making an interactive teaching and learning area and also a quiet area with seating for children at playtime.

Krafty Kids Creative Craft Club - meets every Wednesday lunchtime. Mrs. Goddard, Learning Mentor said 'The children have fun making things from recycled materials. They then sell their products in a 'Mini-Enterprise' venture and use the proceeds, to make a difference helping children less fortunate than themselves. Last year the children bought a goat, a toilet, planted twenty five trees and clean water for fifty people through the Oxfam Funusual Gift Aid Scheme. So far this year the children have raised enough money to purchase another goat and school kit for five children'.

Brain Academy is run by the Headteacher, Joanne Richardson. This is an enjoyable weekly problem solving session, for able, gifted and talented children. which extends and broadens their problem solving skills. Mainly based around ICT it has recently involved making a news programme with digital movie facilities.  In the near future the Brain Academy Club will be extended to include children from year two upwards.

The provision of extra-curricular musical activities has seen an increase in the number of children involved in woodwind instruction. Music teacher Sam Gurney is delighted with the interest and calibre of the children participating. At Christmas although some of the children had only been playing their instruments for several weeks they played an introduction to the 'Christmas Praise'  musical production.

Bookworms - Book Review Scheme has been a huge success throughout the whole school involving children from as young two and a half from our Pre  Five Group.  Christine Bruce, Literacy Co-ordinator said 'Initially we introduced Bookworms Book Review Scheme to raise the profile of reading both in school and at home. The scheme has encouraged even the most reluctant reader to read regularly and we are always delighted to reward the children with a book prize at the end of each half term.  As an extension to this scheme October saw the introduction of Barnaby Bear Parent and Child Reading Club. Anna Wilson, Reception and Year 1 teacher  hopes to extend this to include a weekly parent and child library session.

Shooters and Snappers a digital photography club will be introduced after the February half term, to promote study of nature and an awareness of surroundings, whilst also developing skills in the use of photographic and I.C.T. equipment.

Chess-Nuts chess club, to promote lateral thinking. Children as young as six attend this wekly club, run on Tuesday lunchtime.

Thanks to the participation of staff and parents working together in partnership our children are really benefiting from their involvement which has been extended into the community of Bramham with the school at its heart.

Bramham Primary School children were given the unique opportunity to question Rocket Scientist,  Margaret Bending who has designed, built and launched a rocket carrying a payload.

ROSAT maps the skies looking for supernovas, black holes and energy sources. Margaret’s satellite is still transmitting valuable information about the solar system back to earth today.

The children were enthralled and fascinated as she demonstrated her purpose built rocket; and they are keen to build on this experience by keeping close relations with Margaret their very own ‘Rocket Scientist’ whilst emailing N.A.S.A., British Aerospace and other space related organisations.

Two Year 2 children Lydia  and Olivia  said that ‘ Everyone is born with stardust in their body, Margaret also told us new and interesting facts about the sun because it  gets bigger with time and that if you look at the sun now that’s where it was eight minutes a go.’

This year we are hoping to produce our own Christmas cards with photographs of our children in a winter setting. Karen Haslam from Black Sheep Photography has offered to help us with this venture. She has suggested various winter backdrops for the photographs, and it would be wonderful if the children could bring into school woolly hats and scarves, Reindeer horns or Santa Hats for these festive photos. The Christmas cards will go on sale after the half term holiday.

Executive Headteacher Pam Edwards said:

One of the biggest issues highlighted by the government on Tuesday 10th October is the physical fitness of the nation. At Bramham Primary School we are committed to providing our children with the opportunity to set the foundations for a healthy lifestyle and to educate our children to help future generations.
